Florida Power & Light (FPL): generator, battery backup & CPAP rules

Service area: Much of Florida's east and southwest coasts and Northwest Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Fort Myers, Naples, Sarasota, Daytona and Pensacola

Short answer: Meter collars — Not accepted. Medical program — Medically Essential Service Program. Backup battery program — None found.

Meter collar transfer switches

Not accepted

Not allowed. FPL's Electric Service Standards state that meter socket base bypass switches, such as generator interconnection devices, may not be installed inside or outside the meter socket. Standby generators must use a listed transfer device that disconnects from FPL before connecting the generator.

Generator and battery disconnect requirements

An FPL-approved visible-open AC disconnect is required for larger (Tier 2 and 3) net-metered renewable systems. Backup batteries without renewable generation need no interconnection agreement but must prevent backfeed, be UL 1741 certified and carry a battery-storage placard on the meter enclosure.

Gas meter upgrades for standby generators

Gas utility: TECO Peoples Gas

No published meter upgrade fee. Peoples Gas does offer a Residential Standby Generator (RSG) rate for homes whose only gas appliance is a generator: $41.00 per month plus $0.58931 per therm base rate (2026). Ask Peoples Gas about meter sizing.
